KN Sports Day 2011

Kanchananukroh School traditionally celebrate sports day over a 3 day period, usually in the 3rd or 4rth week of August every year. This year, Sports Day commenced from August 24 to August 26. As early as the last week of July, the time frame for each subject was shortened just to give time for the students to practice and prepare for the said activity. During the week leading up to Sports Day, the whole school (students and teachers) was divided into four teams –blue, green, pink, and yellow, that is depending on the class where you belong. Everyday from 15:00 – 15:45 in the afternoons the teams meet to practice their cheers and songs.

I have witnessed this kind of activity in Thailand several times and in my opinion, it’s not just an ordinary sports day. They have various sports activities depending on what the school organized for them but mostly they put on cheer-leading and dance routines as the main activity.
In the first day of the school Sports Day, there was a huge parade of all the students on the main street, featuring many of the students wearing beautiful traditional and innovative Thai costumes.

Teachers were scattered along the side of the road watching and appreciating the elegance of the procession.

After the parade which almost took more than one hour before they assembled at the school ground, there was a short ceremony done before the real competition started.

The cheering competition set off showing students’ talents in dancing, splitting and stunts oblivious of the heat of the sun since they are doing it in the open field….During this activity, aside from the colorful costumes of the cheerleaders, huge painted backdrops and color matched cheer teams were seen every time they do their cheering…I cant imagine how much money the teams spent for all those things they used not to mention all the foods, etc…

The games were then simultaneously started - Badminton, basketball , volleyball and sepak takraw.

Since Cheering competition is usually the main event, it lasted till the third day..

It so happened that we went to Bangkok for the English Program Open House so I wasn’t able to witness the third day.

.........and the sport's day was finished.. It'll be diffucult to start the lesson again...Surely, students minds are still wandering...sigh sigh and sigh.....
