Wai Khru Ceremony

Wai Khru ceremony is a thai national tradition which is celebrated every year. This ceremony is a special day for students to pay respect and to express gratitude to their teachers for the hard works they did in teaching them in the past. This is usually celebrated toward the beginning of the new academic year usually in June. The date depends on the school though it takes place on a Thursday and each school over Thailand has their own way of celebrating this event. In Kanchananukroh School, the ceremony was held on the 9th of June 2011.

In the afternoon of June 8, students in every class started making their bouquet of flowers for their class advisers since each class must have to prepare at least two. On this day every students came to school with flowers to their teachers. In the morning, the ceremony was opened by the school director by lighting candles and incense sticks and paying homage to the Buddha image. Afterwhich, four selected students did a Buddhist chant followed by singing a song that demonstrated their appreciation for the teachers. Teachers in every level went up and sit at the stage. Two representatives from every class went up the stage on their knees and offer their teachers individual bouquet of flowers. The teachers received the flowers and give students some advice.

After all the teachers received flowers, the flowers from the ceremony were lined up in a table for judging. There were selected teachers who acted as the judges for the competition.

The giving of flowers to the teachers continued for the whole morning. Finally, there were over ten bunches of flowers for every teacher. It’s so nice and overwhelming to receive flowers from the students.
